5Great Value - Great Workout Instruction  Aug 14, 2009
This is an excellent training protocol DVD and at $10 an incredible value. The range of exercises shown are broadly applicable to just about any sport. I'm not a basketball fan, so I had never heard of Stephon Marbury before I ran across the "Youtube" teaser for this DVD while looking for circuit training ideas. I saw enough of interest to buy it. I'm glad I did; its one of the best of its type that I've seen. You can spend a lot more money on instructional training DVDs and get a lot less.

The DVD is organized by daily workouts (5). Each is logical, well structured, and explained fully. Most of the exercises fall into what are currently called `functional' training. Some of the movements are novel, some I've seen in other training DVDs, and some are standards. They are put together in a complementary and unique way which is one of the things that makes this DVD useful. Each day has a different focus: M = Core Stability & Endurance, Tues = Lower Body, W = Stability, Thu = Strength & Power, and F = Circuit Training). The instruction by the folks from AIM Sports Medicine is great. One caveat; most of the exercises shown require technical proficiency, so a good foundation in basic strength and conditioning is necessary. Doing overhead one arm kettle bell walking lunges if you can't do a regular bodyweight lunge is asking to get hurt. While Stephon is a gifted athlete and had obviously practiced the exercises a great deal, there was still a marked difference between his execution of the movements and the instructors. Keep that in mind. As a bonus the DVD also has good sections on foam rolling rehab, stretching, and soft tissue work.

There are three limitations to the DVD. One is that the camera angles and shots were annoying at times. The photographer seemed to be more interested in the `artistic value' of the subject rather then getting the proper instructional angle. Fortunately, this turns out to be only a minor drawback and at times did make the DVD slightly more entertaining than norm. The second is that the instruction, while complete, goes fast. Unless you're somewhat familiar with the material, be prepared to watch it several times before being comfortable enough to go out and try some of the more complicated movements. Finally, there is no program theory or background provided. The exercises are presented and explained, but typically not why they were chosen out of a broader menu of possible exercise choices. So if you're looking for that, you'll be disappointed. This is a great physical training and conditioning DVD. It doesn't try to be more then that.

One thing that comes out on the DVD was Stephon's affection and respect for his trainers. With many years in the NBA, he's a wealthy man and didn't need to make this DVD. Most athletes wouldn't have bothered. Selling it for $10, he isn't going to make much money either. Several times on the tape he says `this is for you'; i.e. to help others learn what he wished he knew earlier in his career. He seemed sincere in that and also in his respect for the people helping him. That says a lot about him.
